Tools for Architecture is a research unit based at the Architectural Association in London formed by a team of architecture undergraduate students and lead by Space Popular directors Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg. Work at TFA aims to develop new experience driven design methods.

Space-Making in the Virtual Realm

One reality I experience in my daily life takes place in The Sims,  where a primary objective involves the making and editing of space to create one’s ideal spatial environment. The Sims’  space-making methods are simplified to allow any player, regardless of a design background, to be able to modify their immediate surroundings with ease.

An interesting aspect of the game is the user interface, shown below, which attempts to simplify the design process with the use of various tools.

Shown in the diagram below are some spatial results of several in-game tools.

Space within the game often begins with the drawing of walls and placing of floors, before being further modified by ‘painting’ materials or placing thresholds.
