Typology and architecture of trust

Tullianum: The prison was constructed around 640–616 BC, by Ancus Marcius. The Tullianum was used as a jail or holding cell for short periods before executions and as a site for executions. Prisoners were lowered through an opening into the lower dungeon. A dungeon is a room or cell in which prisoners are held, especially underground.

Panopticon: A prison concept from which all prisoners can be observed — an idea first proposed by Jeremy Bentham in 1791. The cells lined up around a circular form and an observation place at the center. The design made the guards easier to see all the cells at one time. Panopticon provided control through both isolation and constant surveillance.  Solid walls between the cells would prevent any communication between inmates, and a small window in the back of the cell would allow light to illuminate the contents.
