Diploma Unit Two. Architectural Association School of Architecture

Tools for Architecture is a research unit based at the Architectural Association in London formed by a team of MArch AA Diploma students and lead by Space Popular directors Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg.

Building System Fabrication

The stereotomic building system is fabricated in three different methods, each dependent on each other.

Method 1: CNC Milling

M2

The first step is to create a positive element from which to derive the other material versions. Through CNC milling, one can use various types of material, ranging in weight and density.

Method 2: Casting

M1

From the positive element, a mould can be produced in order to use cast materials, such as plastics or glass.

Method 3: Sheet pressing

M3

To facilitate elements that can be hollow as to incorporate fillings of varying sorts, the positive element can be used as a form template for pressing sheet materials onto it. Materials used can be metallic in nature, but structural plastics such as FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) can be utilised.
