Continuous surface and non-continuous surface study

In the case study, I was looking at the Gothic architecture. I am interested the complex
surface in the Gothic architecture.
The rib create the subdivision of the form and it introduce the diagonal view. Before
that, the barrel vault only creates transverse view. Although ribs divide the surface, but
the flow of force are still continuous as all the ribs are connected back at the transverse
rib. Also, the division of the surface will not create new addition space, it is the division
of one single space. All the surface are not independent, they are called sub-wholes.
